A FUTURE HOME FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS
The CITY of BOROONDARA has
purchased the Former Kew Police Station and Court House from
the State Government, and we need to raise the $2.1 million needed to restore and
refurbish the buildings.
The KEW HISTORICAL SOCIETY INC. has undertaken to
organize the KEW COURT HOUSE RESTORATION APPEAL to raise this money with the support of the COUNCIL of the
CITY of BOROONDARA, and the local community.
These “MYSTERY WALKS”, initiated by the newly-formed
KEW COURT HOUSE ARTS ASSOCIATION INC.
are a part of this fund-raising effort. They also provide an opportunity to view
the interior of the buildings in their present state.
The Court House is a unique part of this nationally acclaimed group
of buildings. It promises a great future as a home for the Performing
Arts and hopefully will become the nucleus of the future Arts Complex.
Please give generously to the Appeal and enable us to make the dream a reality.

SOME HISTORY
THE KEW MERCURY, FRIDAY, MARCH 9, 1888
NEW PUBLIC OFFICES AT KEW
The most conspicuous pile of buildings in the business
portion of Kew at the present time is the handsome structure
now approaching completion, which the Government have
erected as a post and telegraph office, court-house and police
quarters. The style of architecture is that known as St. Ann’s,
the outer walls being finished with red brick with black poin-
ting, alternated with columns, and other ornamental cement
work, picked out and coloured to resemble Portland stone.
The chimney stacks are certainly unique of their kind, and are
most elaborately finished. The roof is blue slate with grey bands,
and the ridge is surmounted with terra cotta cresting. There are
also panels of terra cotta above each window, and the same
material is introduced in various other positions. An iron palisade
on a cut stone base surrounds the building, and the tout ensemble
will be very imposing when the hoarding is removed.
