MOU Signing for Kew Police Station and Court House

A Memorandum of Understanding was recently signed by Council and the Kew Historical Society to formally signal the start of fundraising efforts to restore the Kew Police Station and Court House to their former glory.

The City of Boroondara and the State Government agreed in August to the conditions of the Contract of Sale for the purchase of the buildings for community use. Mayor of Boroondara, Councillor Wegman said that although many pledges had been given, including $50,000 from Council, the signing of the MOU was a significant milestone since a public rally in June.

“We’ve successfully achieved phase one which was to negotiate the purchase of the building. But the hard work is only just beginning to ensure the building remains in the rightful hands of the community.“

It’s critical that a fundraising target of $2M is met by March 2007 otherwise there is a danger the building may fall into developers hands to be used for a commercial purpose like a bottle shop or tavern,” said Cr Wegman. “It would be a crying shame if this happened if we couldn’t raise the funds.

”I would strongly urge those with an interest in preserving our history and the amenity of our local area to get behind the campaign before it’s too late.

“Council received a letter of support from the Victorian Premier, Mr Steve Bracks and is optimistic that the State Government will support Council in its applications for funding from the State Government Community Support Fund and a heritage grant,” said Cr Wegman.Studley Ward Councillor Phillip Healey is confident that the community can achieve the target of $2 million before March 2007.

“The Kew Historical Society has been in talks with corporate bodies seeking in-kind and financial support and so far things are looking positive,” Cr Healey said. “Bendigo Bank have generously kick-started the appeal with a cheque for $750.

We are confident that many other businesses will see the value of this important community project and follow suit.”
